Mono and disodium adducts of several compounds with C=C, C=O, C=N, N=N, N=NO. and N=O double bonds were prepared to test the ability of the formed radical anions and dianions to initiate the polymerization of acrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate, styrene, and vinylacetate in tetrahydrofuran.

1,1,4,4-tetraphenylbutane-1,4-disodium, stilbene-monosodium, stilbene-disodium, and tetraphenylethylene-disodium start the polymerization of styrene, methylmethacrylate, and acrylonitrile. The dimetal compounds of benzophenone, phenylbiphenylketone, dibiphenylketone, and benzophenoneanile also start the polymerization of these three monomers, while the corresponding monosodium adducts polymerize methylmethacrylate and
