Polyethylene/poly(2-hydroxyethyl m e t h a c r y l a t e ) a n d polyethylene/poly(2,3-dih y d r o x y p r o p y l m e t h a c r y l a t e ) b l e n d s w e r e p r ep a r e d a s m a t e r i a l s f o r c o n t a c t w i t h b l o o d . I n t h e c o u r s e o f s o a k i n g t h e b l e n d s i n d i st i l l e d water f o r t h r e e months t h e s w e l l i n g a n d c o n t a c t a n g l e s o f a i r b u b b l e s on t h e s u rf a c e were measured. The o b s e r v e d d e c r e a s e i n b l e n d -w a t e r i n t e r f a c i a l t e n s i o n was prob a b l y due t o s e p a r a t i o n and d e p o s i t i o n o f h y d r o p h i l i c p o l y m e r s a t b l e n d -w a t e r i n t e r f a c e . Thrombogeneity o f t h e b l e n d s i n e x -v i v o t e s t d e c r e a s e d w i t h i n c r e a s i n g t i m e o f s o a k i n g i n w a t e r .
