✦ Synopsis
In the title complex, {[Fe(C 7 H 3 NO 4 )(C 10 H 8 N 2 )(H 2 O)]ÁH 2 O} n , the divalent iron cation is in the centre of a distorted octahedron formed by three N and three O atoms. Two N atoms belong to the chelating 2,2-bipyridine ligand and the third to the pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate ligand, while the O atoms belong to monodentate carboxylate groups of two different pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate ligands and to one water molecule. The connectivity between the Fe II cations and the pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate units gives rise to corrugated layers parallel to the ab plane. The water molecules of crystallization are located between the layers. Medium-strong O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and the layers stabilize the structure.

The 3-sulfonatobenzoate ligand acts as a 3 -bridging linker, generating a one-dimensional ladder. The packing is further stabilized by an O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen-bonding network
The title La^III^ complex, [La~2~(C~7~H~3~NO~4~)~3~(H~2~O)~5~]·H~2~O, forms a layer-type polymeric structure with La^III^ ions bridged by pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate ligands. The asymmetric unit contains two La^III^ ions, the first exhibiting a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic geometry (nine-co
