Planar chiral or-substituted ferrocenecarboxaldehydes were treated with samarium diiodide to give stereoselectively pinacol coupling products with a threo-configurafion in good yields. The resulting dihydroxyl of the product was substituted with stereochemical inversion by an SNI reaction.
