From the rhizome and roots of Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle(huhuengliau:#j~&)(Scrophulariaceae), which grows in Himalayan area and is wed as a folk-medicine in India and China, Raetogi et al. isolated') a bitter principle kutkin(=6-cinnzmoyl+3-D-glucozidyl vanillate) in addition to zauuitol 2) and vanillic acid, while Yeh reported the isolation of picrorhizin(=glucosido-vanilloyl glucose),
π SIMILAR VOLUMES
Recently six compounds were isolated from Isodon japonicus Ham (Lablatae) and their structural elucidations were made by Fujita and his collaborators (l-3). From the same plont we have isolated a new bitter compound, provlslomlly naned isodonal, of which structural elucidation will be stated here.
