✦ Synopsis

The photophysical behavior of biphenylene has been investigated employing picosecond time-resolved absorption measurements over the range 400-760 nm. The temporal behavior of the different absorption maxima suggest that the transient absorption results from two different configurations of biphenylene. It is estimated that the configuration changes within I S-30 ps after excitation. The lifetime of the relaxed emitting state of the compound is measured to be 245 k 15 ps.

The fluorescence emission from the S2 state of xanthione in benzene solution was time resolved using a Nd3' glass mode-locked laser driven light gate technique. Using a separate optical apparatus, in conjunction with the mode-locked laser, transient absorption spectta were recorded at times subseque
