Excited-state proton transfer in 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiaxole (HBT) dissolved in pyridine is investigated. New absorptions and fluorescence bands are detected after addition of water or NaOH to the solution. The spectra are identical to the HBT anion absorption and fluorescence. Picosecond spec

✦ Synopsis
Transient absorption spectra of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) were studied in various solvents after picosecond excitation, Strong absorption bands are observed in the wavelength range from 400 to 500 nm. The kinetics of the absorption change consists of a first component with a decay time of 14 to 300 ps depending upon the solvent and a second one, which is constant up to 1 ns. A comparison with the emission kinetics of HBT shows that the first component is caused by transitions from the fluorescing level of the HBT keto tautomer to higher singlet states; the long-lived contribution is attributed to the keto ground state.
