✦ Synopsis

The appearance of two components in the decay of the emission of trans-stilbene solutions has been re-elamined b> an analysis of the time resolved fluorescence in the pica-and nanosecond r&on. above 273 K_ The slow component, attributed to a return to the trans-o,eometry after initial photoisomerization. has not been observed in pure samples. Frsm the measured lifetimes It results that the rate constant k rP for photoisomerization to ewited twisted stdbene sho\s an Arrhenius temperature dependence. v.ith an activation energy of 2-6 kul/mole and a frequency factor of 1.2 X 10" s-'. The rerene process has a rate constant kpt with ktp/kpt %-5 X 102.
