The stereochemistries of cycloadditions of mesitonitrile oxide to norbomadiene and nine 7-substituted derivatives have been investigated. The stereoselectivities are controlled primarily by torsional effects which are altered by 7-substituents.

โฆ Synopsis
Recently, the stable 0-methyl podocarponitrile oxide(I) became _-~ readily available by oxidation of podocarpinal syn-oxime with lead tetrzacetate(l). It was of interest to us to determine whether irradiation of nitrile oxide I would lead to bridging reactions similar to those reported by ApSimon and Bdwards(l), who obtained lactax II upon irradiation of the acid aside III,
