β¦ Synopsis
We report time-resolved fluorescence decay lifetimes from photoselected states of jet-cooled 4-ethyl-trans-stilbene (4ETS) and 4-n-propyl-trans-stilbene (4PTS) in the energy range E, = O-2800 cm-' above the S, origin. Alkyl substitution enhances the non-radiative decay rates. These data can be fitted by the statistical RRKM theory in conjunction with the reduction of the photoisomerization threshold from E, = 13OOk 50 cm-' for trans-stilbene to Et = 1100 f 100 cm-' for 4ETS. and E, = lOOO+ 100 cm-' for IPTS.

New details of the dynamics and spectroscopy of trans-stilbene are revealed by picosecond excitation of jet-cooled and collision-free molecules. The fluorescence spectra clearly show the low-frequency torsional modes of the ground state. The time-resolved fluorescence following $1 excitation exhibit
We report the first observation of a reaction which, in a single solvent, starts as a barrier crossing process at low pressure and turns into a relaxation on a banierless potential at high pressure. The pressure and temperature dependences of trans-stilbene photoisomerization in n-alkanols were inve
The results of spectral and photophysical studies strongly suggest that photoinduced proton transfer in 7-(2-pyridyl)indole (1) is accompanied by mutual twisting of the pyridyl and indole moieties. This conclusion is supported by the unusual finding that the photoreaction is faster in a cold, supers
