β¦ Synopsis
Laser vaporization of a metal substrate within a pulsed supersonic nozzle is used to generate bwms of iron-atom clusters. F%, x = 2-25, which are detected by laser photoionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. By examining the dependence of the Fe_: signal on ionizing laser intensity and frequency, we have been able to roughly determine the ionization potentials (IPs) of the isolated iron clusters. Oscillations in the curve of IP versus cluster size are observed. in the design and construction of the pulsed nozzle sys-tem_ Also we thank R-E. Smalley and D_J_ Trevor for valuable discussions.
