The surface recombination of photocreated charge carriers is reduced by dipping a p-GaAs electrode in an aqueous solution containing ammonium sulfide. This pretreatment dramatically enhances photoelectrochemical reactivity to form phenylacetic acid from carbon dioxide and benxyl chloride.
