The photocycloaddition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) to carbon-carbon multiple bonds to give cyclobutene derivatives has been of considerable interest, and its reactions with aromatic umlecules have been successfully used for the synthesis of cyclooctatetraene derivatives 2 .
