✦ Synopsis

The photochromism of a thiophenefulgide is investigated by optical absorption spectroscopy. The photoreactions take place in different media with different quantum yields. In a polymer matrix the photoreactions were followed down to liquid-helium temperature. From the temperature dependence of the kinetic constants we obtained an activation energy Eb= 50 cm-' for the bleaching reaction; the colouring reaction is not thermally activated.
