✦ Synopsis

Photolysis of anthracene (350 nm) in aerated water yields endoperoxide and 9,lCLanthraquinone as the major primary photoproducts. Photolysis of anthracene in oxygen-deficient aqueous solutions yields the three isomers of lO,lO'-dihydroxy-9,9',10,10'tetrahydro-9,9'-bianthryl as the primary photoproduct. Involvement of a cation radical mechanism is suggested.

Site-selective heterodirner formation in anthracene crystals containing a small amount of 2hydroxyanthracene (2OEL4) has been investigated. While direct irradiation at low temperatures of the absorption origins of the two 20HA sites (Oa and 09) in anthracene did not lead to dimer formation, one of t

The absorption spectra of six bridged anthracenes, produced by photocleavage of the corresponding photoisomer crystals, have been studied. In each ease at least one non-fluorescent conformation hasbeen found which is transformed non-radiatively into another intermediate which can partition either wa
