β¦ Synopsis
The absorption spectra of six bridged anthracenes, produced by photocleavage of the corresponding photoisomer crystals, have been studied. In each ease at least one non-fluorescent conformation hasbeen found which is transformed non-radiatively into another intermediate which can partition either way to form both ground state isomers.

## MOST electrophilic reactions of anthmcene take place at the meso-positions. For example, nitmtion gives 9-nitmanthmcene and then 9,1g-dinitroanthmcens (1). In addition, nitration of anthmrfuinone affords I-nitroanthmquinone. Consequently, prepamtions of 8-substituted onthmcenes require tedious

EDA. complexes of several substituted anthracenes with tetranitromethane is monitored by means of picosecond spectroscopy. Excitation of the charge-transfer band of these EDA complexes produces high yields of 1
