Comparative P/iotolyw uf'l arid 10 in Different Solvents (Merry-go-round experiments). Equimolar solns. of 1 and 10 were irradiated under conditions of total light absorption using a merry-go-round setup. The degree of conversion was monitored by GC using undecane as internal standard.

## Abstract The 6‐hydroxy‐2H‐pyran‐3(6H)‐ones 1a–d are esterified stereoselectively with acetic and formic acid, and with several amino acids and peptide derivatives using the DCC/DMAP method. The direct synthesis of the 6‐alkoxy derivatives 3g–k is also studied.
