✦ Synopsis

Photolysis (A = 254 nm) of 4-(tert-butyl)-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-7,7-dimethyl-2H-l-benzopyran-2,5(3H)-dione (3a) in t-BuOH affords 2-(2,2-dimethylpropylidene)-5,5-dimethyl-l,3-cyclohexanedione (la) in 80% yield via homolysis of the lactone 0-CO bond and subsequent ketene elimination.

## Abstract A novel oxidation method for the synthesis of labile azo‐alkanes is reported. Matrix‐isolated 2,3‐naphthoquinodimethane is obtained by photolysis of 1,4‐dihydrobenzo[__g__]‐phthalazine in a rigid matrix (EPA glass) at 77 K and the electronic structure of its ground and lowest excited st
