By means of a newly developed electron energy analyser. the ratio a(\*P3q2 j/o(\*P$) for 90" electron ejection has been directly measured for argon gas in the range O-0.050 eV above the respective 2P:n and 'PO tR photoionization thresholds. Pronounced spectral variation of the branching ratio is obs
