β¦ Synopsis
The fluorescence emission of p-terphenyl <TP) molecules in solution and in the crystalline state at various temperatures in the range 300-4 K are comparad The appeasance of new bands at higher energies with decreasing temperature ccirresponds with a phase transitlon m the aystanine materiaL The outer and central rings of the molecule are known to be inclined at angles between 16 and 29 in this low temperature modification and It is concluded that a similar molecular confiiuratlon exists in solution. Broad vl%roGc peaks observed at 4 K are consistent with structures exhibiting long range disorder in which the long molecular axs may adopt variable orlcntations and where the rmgs assume a number of different relative inclinations. The absorption and fluorescence characteristics of polyphenyl molecules e g. biphenyl (BP), p-terphenyl (TP) and p-quarterphenyl (QP) in solution have been

The UV absorption spectrum of a TP smgle crystal IS measured between 297 and 77 K. The UV spectrum shifts to hyhcr encgy as the temperature falls. The temperature dependence of the UV absorption spectrum mdrcates that a disphcwe transltlon occurs rather than an order-disorder one III a TP crystal.
The results of a preliminary investigation of the growth and nlorphology of p-terphenyl crystals grown by sublimation and by solvent evaporation methods are reported. It was observed that lozenge-shaped (001) crystal plates are obtained from xylene and benzene solution while dendritic crystals by su
A study of the orientational dynamics of liquid pterphenyl in the time domain by means of transient optical Kerr effect spectroscopy is presented. The orientational relaxation is measured at several temperatures above the liquid-plastic phase transition, following the decay from a few hundreds offs
The T + So absorption spectra of ap-terphenyi Crp) crystal at 77 K and room temperature were measured-These spectra were compared with the T c So absorption and phosphorescence spectra of TP in solutron. Tke comparison of these spectra gave some mfo~ation about the potent& curves of TP molecuies as
