PROBLEM

The Memory-for-Designs Test (MFD) developed by Graham and Kendall(') involves the presentation of simple geometric designs and reproduction of these designs from immediate memory. Difficulty in performance of such a task has been assumed to be associated with "organic" impairment. In their manual, Graham and Kendall (2) report success with the instrument in differentiating brain-disordered Ss from those without brain disorder. They state that while there is considerable overlap in the score distributions of the two groups, the overlap is largely failure to detect brain damage rather than to misclassify normals. A major claim is that the MFD appears to difTerentiate equally well various subgroups of patients with brain disorders including those with focal and diffuse lesions.

Although the MFD was standardized with Ss above I& 70 and the authors make no claim for its utility with retarded Ss, the test appeared to have some potential advantages when used with mildly and moderately retarded adolescents and *Mimeographed tableu presen. the MFD item intsreorreletiona, centroid factor l -, rotated factor loadings and i n -% t i o ~ of MFD errors, EEG ratinga and intelligence meslllllpd may be obtained from the authors upon requeet.
