## Batch autoclave experiments show that pre-swelling of bituminous and lower rank coals with a suitable solvent, followed by removal of the swelling agent, significantly enhances conversion and product quality during subsequent liquefaction. The enhancement depends on coal rank and swelling agen

โฆ Synopsis
Most coal liquefaction processes are based on the thermal cleavage of activated bonds giving reactive carbon and oxygen radicals which abstract hydrogen atoms from the donor solvent. The role of oil is approximated in this study by using a simple standard reaction. A series of five representative solvents react with phenyl and phenyloxy radicals generated by thermolysis of benzoyl peroxide at 87ยฐC in tetrachloroethylene. The n.m.r. analysis of the reacting mixture defines four performance indices, i.e. the hydrogen-donor, the efficiency, the recycle and the scavenger indices, which characterize the ability of these solvents as efficient recycle oils in coal liquefaction processes. 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene proves to be by far the most appropriate solvent for this purpose.

A flowing-solvent liquefaction reactor has been used to examine the primary solubilization potential of a range of coals. The reactor configuration allows the suppression of secondary reactions by sweeping the heated zone with a continuous flow of solvent. The design of the system combines low therm
Low-temperature air autoxidation of SRC in quinoline followed by anaerobic thermolysis yields as much as 30% of low-molecular-might (<210) compounds. Preliminary autoxidation of the quinolinesoluble portion of a bituminous coal gave a significant yield of similar low-molecular-weight compounds. Thes
