โœฆ Synopsis

Anachis avara SAY, a prosobranch gastropod belonging to the family Columbellidae, is found near low tide mark upon rocky shorelines and jetties along the New England coast (fig . 13) . Apparently no published literature exists on the natural history of Anachis avara despite its commonplace occurrence in the vicinity of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where it has been observed by students of invertebrate zoology for over fifty years . The duration of the breeding period is unknown, but from our own observations we know that it extends at least from the middle of June to the end of July . Early larvae have been identified from the plankton in the first week of July at Woods Hole.

We have successfully grown the larvae of Anachis avara by the method described in an earlier paper (SCHELTEMA, 1962a). Snails were collected at Nobska Point, Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts from the lower edge of the Balanus zone during the second week of July . These were kept in an aquarium where they started producing egg capsules within a few days . We removed these capsules from the sides of the aquarium and placed them in aerated, three-liter jars . Upon completion of embryonic and early post-embryonic development, the veliger larvae emerged from the capsules . Larvae were maintained in aerated three-liter jars at room temperature (19ยฐ-22 ยฐC.) and fed from unialgal cultures of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum BOHLIN at concentrations of 200,000 to 400,000 cells per milliliter . Adult snails from which the eggs were obtained have been 1) Contribution number 1341, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution .
