β¦ Synopsis
The lupus band test (LBT) is a term employed to describe the deposition of immunoglobulins (Ig) and complement at the dermo-epidermal junction (DE J) [19]. In 1963, Burnham et al. [3] first described the presence of Ig deposition at the DEJ of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Many authors consider LBT to be highly specific for SLE [2,5,10,18,21,23]. However, the relationship of LBT to clinical disease activity still remains obscure. Burnham and Fine [2] suggested a significant correlation between positive LBT and lupus nephritis. Similar findings were also reported by other authors [10,19]. In contrast, some investigators have failed to demonstrate a significant association between positive LBT and lupus nephritis [4,11,20].
To resolve this issue, we investigated the correlation among positivity of LBT, renal immunofluorescent (IF) pattern, and proteinuria by using MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr (MRL) and BXSB/Mp (BXSB) mice which are new murine models for human SLE [17]. Dermatological findings have already been reported by our laboratory for these mouse strains [7,9,13].
