โฆ Synopsis
Measurements on paramagnetic relaxation in a mixed crystal of chromium potassium alum and aluminium potassium alum were carried out in the liquid helium range. Attention is mainly given to the adiabatic value of the differential susceptibility in connection with the question as to whether or not thermal equilibrium in the-spin system can exist and to the dependence of the relaxation time on the external field. Contrary to the data found for the alums of iron and chromium, the relaxation time appears to decrease with increasing fieldstrength in agreement with the theories on relaxation of Kronig and Van Vleck.
The contrast between the properties of chromium potassium alum and the present salt is discussed in connection with these theories.
