This approach is made possible by CMR's 'mixed reactant flow-through' fuel cell architecture, and aims to eliminate the costs associated with the current high-precision, low-yield, multistage assembly -comprising a high number of component pieces -found in traditional fuel cells. The company will initially address the rapidly developing DMFC arena with its technology, but eventually it is thought that the technology and design architecture could be equally applicable to other fuel cell chemistries, such as PEM, solid oxide and alkaline fuel cells.

Meanwhile, CMR has met its key performance milestone of producing a stack consistently delivering a power density of greater than 500 W/l. The firm's engineering team has developed a mixed-reactant fuel cell stack that demonstrates this power density with a sub-mm cell repeat distance, using a non-platinum, methanol-tolerant cathode catalyst. Individual cell performance in the stack is also in line with the milestone, with a cell power density of greater than 25 mW/cm 2 and a cell pitch of 0.5 mm.
