✦ Synopsis

Cobalt compounds are especially interesting for electrochemical reactions, involving a chemisorptions tep. Polycrystalline cobalt oxide samples have been prepared by thermochemical oxidation of a CoLi alloy with a well defined composition.

Steady state behaviour concerning oxygen reduction in alkaline medium has been examined. Performance passes through a maximum for a lithium content of 0.15 at-%.

Transient state behaviour has been examined by the potentiostatic pulse method. From the data it is possible to determine reaction parameters such as oxygen-chemisorption velocity and coverage, and oxide parameters such as carrier density, surface-potential-barrier height and thickness. The results show that the limiting factor is a surface-potential barrier which inhibits the oxygen chemisorption step.
