## Abstract A kinetic study of the aqueous polymerization of ethyl acrylate (EA) was carried out at 30°C in a dilute nitric acid medium with ammonium ceric nitrate (ACN)–__n__‐propanol (__n__PA) and ACN–ethanol as redox initiator systems. The ceric‐ion consumption was first‐order with respect to th

✦ Synopsis
The polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by oxygen ascorbic acid (AAt ferric ion system was studied in dil. HNO3 at 40 °. The rate of polymerization, R v, was found gravimetricallv. In the [Fe a+] range, (2-5 x 10-SM, Rp was proportional to [AN] t'5:°'°5, [02] °'5=°'°2 [AA]°~and [Fe3+]°; for [Fe 3+] = (5-30) x 10 s M, it was proportional to [AN] l's+°'°s, [02] o.6+o.o2 , [AA] ° and [Fe3+] -°9+°'°s. A plausible reaction scheme is proposed and rate law presented to explain these results. Rp increased with ionic strength and [HNO3] (up to -0.25 M). An initial rate increase with temperature followed by a decrease was noticed. Chain lengths of the polymers were determined viscometrically.
