Aluminium dissolved in cryolite-alumina melts migrates in the direction of the positive pole by passage of current . By a modified moving boundary technique the dissolved metal was found to separate into two zones with different mobilities . For the cryolite composition at 11100°C the apparent mobil

✦ Synopsis
Abstractaxygen overvoltage on sintered anodes made of SnO, +2 wt % SbzOs + 2 wt% CuO was measured in 2.7 NaF-AIF,-Al,O,(sat) melts at 1000 "C. Prior to use the sintered elwtrodes were dipped into solutions containing doping agents. Doping with Ru, Fe and Cr showed a marked electrocatalytic efTect. Ru was the most effective, and compared with undoped material the coefficients for the initial Tafel line decreased from a = 0.11 to 0.070 V and from b = 0.065 to 0.035 V dec-I. Steeper slopes appeared at high cds, being 0.14VdeY' for Ru. but the overvoltage was as low as 0.15V even at 4Acm-*.
