✦ Synopsis

The presence of Ba at a (\mathrm{Zn}(0001)-0) surface (up to (\theta_{\mathrm{Bg}} \sim 3 \mathrm{ML}) ) gives rise to (\mathrm{BaO}), followed by a peroxo-type species ( (\mathrm{Ba}, \mathrm{Zn}) ) (\mathrm{O}{2}^{\delta-}) at the interface. Such peroxo species are also formed when a Ba-covered (\mathrm{Zn}) surface ( (\theta{\mathrm{Ba}} \sim 0.3 \mathrm{ML}) ) exposed to dioxygen at 200 (\mathrm{K}) is warmed to (400 \mathrm{~K}). Peroxo formation occurs via the oxidation of (\mathrm{O}^{2-}) species. 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
