β¦ Synopsis
The oxygen demand of animal cells in microcarrier culture can be determined using a dissolved oxygen electrode. Continuous monitoring of the oxygen demand by human diploid fibroblasts shows it to be a good indicator of cell number. Furthermore, the oxygen demand of animal cells in large cultures can be supplied using membrane oxygenation using silicone rubber tubing. This method avoids the problems encountered with sparging the culture.
