✦ Synopsis
High yield in acetic acid were obtained in the by oxygen liquid-phase oxidation of 2,3-dimethylbutane at 160 "C, under 25 atm, and catalyzed by 0.64 wt % manganese. The kinetic behaviour of the products formed clears up the mechanism of oxidation. The high reactivity of the tertiary hydrogen atoms relatively to the primary explains the distribution of products. Acetone is highly reactive toward peroxidic radicals. However, its transformation into acetic acid is easily performed only when its oxidation is coupled with that of an hydrocarbon. The initiating effect is interpreted by the theory of the degenerately banched chain reactions.
