✦ Synopsis

Oxidation of a bitumen with air or oxygen in the presence of a diluent significantly increases the asphaltene content and noticeably reduces the asphaltene solubility. It is suggested that one of the main factors influencing the solubility of the asphaltenes, aside from possible polymerization of asphaltenes and resins, is incorporation of oxygen groups, e.g. hydroxyl, into the asphaltenes, and consequent changes in polarity sufficient to influ-

The effect of low temperature oxidation on the composition of Athabasca bitumen was examined. Oxidation temperatures in the range 125-l 35Β°C and extents of oxidation up to 100 mg 02/g bitumen were investigated. The aromatics concentration was observed to decline steadily and the concentration of asp

Simple chemical reactions are described which bring about modification of the components of a bitumen. This i!: accomplished by using an oxygen-containing gas and subsequent treatment with alkali solutions of sulphites and/or bisulphites. The resulting water-soluble sulphonated bituminous derivative
