Accumiilation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) a a s studied in a eutrophic pond and in cultures of Scenedesmus abundans. Samples of pond water and media were treated with a ration exchanger in Xa cycle a i d chromatographed on Sephadex G 25 and G 10. -UV spectra of the peak fractions were recorded. I n the pond about half of the organic carbon is in fractions x i t h an apparent molecular weight (AMW) of 500-1000, while in the algal medium (after cultivation) most of organic carbon has an AMW of about 120. These and spectral data did not suggest that aromatics and compounds with conjugated double bonds %'ere major organic constituents of DOC.
