β¦ Synopsis
Taking states of a binary alloy as defined by the number of sites o.f the sublattices occupied by oue kind of atom, the temperature conditions of stability for such states are established. It is shown that as far as the approximation goes in general no state can be stable where three or more sublattices have a different share-of atoms, ha'the case of a cubic face centered lattice we can, besides the state of random distribution, only have a cubic phase, where one sublattice has a special share, and a tetragonal phase with two pairs of sublattices havfng equal shares. The relation of the present theory to Bragg and Willia~als' theory is discussed. It is shown that ill passing from the composition A,~Ba, ~ to A2,B2t j the cubic phase ceases to be stable and the tetragonal phase becomes stable.
