✦ Synopsis

From X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, AlSr 2 YCu 2 O 7 phase shows a tetragonal unit cell and space group P4/mmm, with lattice parameters a ‫؍‬ b‫)5(268.3؍‬ A > and c ‫؍‬ 11.095(5) A > . From selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies, a superstructure with related parameters a s ‫؍‬ 2a t , b s ‫؍‬ 4a t , and c s ‫؍‬ 2c t was found, which is considered to be due to the existence of two types of symmetry-related zigzag AlO chains along the a-direction. Simultaneously, some interlayer disordering occurs, which can be due to the disordered arrangement of these two AlO 4 chains along the c-axis.

Millimeter-size crystals of AlSr 2 YCu 2 O 7 were synthesized by the 6ux method in alumina crucibles. Di4erent mixtures of SrO : CuO (ranging from 25 : 75 to 12 : 88 mol ratio) were used as 6ux. No aluminum was added to the reagents. Depending on the 6ux composition and cooling rate, crystals di4ere
