β¦ Synopsis
Anew optical pumping mechanism is observed for dilute Yb 3+ impurities in a sinple crystal of yttrium ethyl sulphare at low temperatures. The polariza!ion of Yb3+ spins is reduced by illumination with near infrzrcd radiation. This reduction in spin polarization is caus'ed by escitation of molecular vibrations of the ligand molecules surroundin&! the parnmngnetic impurity.
