✦ Synopsis

By magnetic resonance es~criments on the phosphorescing triplet state of biacetyl in a 3-methytpentane glass the zero field splittings and the populating and depopulating rates of the individual triplet spin Ieveis have been me=ured. From these data an assignment of the zero field levels and mechanisms of intersystem crossing in the biacetyl triplet state are presented.

Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) techniques are used to determine the orbital asQnment of the phosphorescent triplet state of p-benzoquinone in the condensed phase. The principal spin-orbit coupl% routes are discussed in terms of the observed spin-vibronic activity.

A phosphorescence line-narrowing technique involving direct quartet ground state to doublet excited state pumping, is used to resolve completely optical-Zeeman components at field strengths compatible with Q-band EPR spectroscopy. By incorporating this technique, ODMR of the lowest doublet excited s
