โœฆ Synopsis

We discuss the relationship between vibrational population relaxation, loss of phase coharence, and the homogeneously broadened spontaneous poklzed Raman linewidth. We derive a general equation reltmg these quantitres. and show that extension of the simple model (where the coupling to the heat bath is linear in the oscillator coordmate) to include the lowest order elastic scattering terms, can resolve the ascrepancy between experiment and earlier theoretics1 calculations based on the lines model.
