β¦ Synopsis
In what follows I will assume, following Horvath (19.81) and Farkas * I wish to thank the participants of the Linguistics Club at Pennsylvania State University, three anonymous referees, the editors of NLLT, F. Ackerman, and especially Gerald Gazdar for valuable comments on previous versions of this paper.
I borrow the term 'downgrading' from Horvath (1981). 2 I am using the term 'downgrading movement' as the name rather than the description of constructions analysed in transformational terms as involving downgrading movement. As will be seen in section~3, there is no m o v e m e n t in the GPSG account of these constructions.
