✦ Synopsis

In self-associated hydrogen bonded amines and alcohols the intensity ratio of the "free" and "associated" OH and NH infrared stretching bands is always greater for the overtones than for the fundamentals.

It is shown that the Raman bands tend to resemble the infrared overtones in this respect. Both facts appear to be connected with the high polarity of the hydrogen bonds.
