On the excitation of Lyman β and Balmer α radiation by electron-impact dissociation of methane

✦ Synopsis

The cross sections for the excitation of Lyp and Ho! when methane is dissociated by electron impact have values of 27.1 x 10-t' cm2 and 26.0 x 1O-'g cm2 respectively at an electron impact energy of 100 eV. These results are in diugreement with the implications of recent polarization measurements of Ha radiation that suggest negligible H(3p) excitation iti the dissociation of CH4 by electron impact. * Preliminary results of this work were presented at the 28th Gaseous Electronic Conference (21-24 October 1975),
