✦ Synopsis

The electrooxidation ofdioxolan in H,SO, solution is studied. As a first approach in studying this complex process, the overall reactions taking place in different potential regions were determined. This was done with the aid of chemical and mass spectrometric analysis of the products and by comparison of the electrochemical behavior of the products with that of the possible intermediates.

The reaction was also studied on porous fuel cell electrodes. The discharge curve of a dioxolan-air cell is explained by the reaction taking place in the low potential region (0.47 V vs he).

An attempt to identify the possible intermediates led to the postulation of a particle containing two carbon atoms, (C=O)2 being responsible for the presence of oxalic acid as one of the reaction products.
