✦ Synopsis
The effect of the ratio a/W on the values of 6i and Ji in a structural steel has been studied by measuring the crack-opening displacement and J-integral at initiation in three-point bend specimens with shallow and deep notches and by the finite element method. It is shown that the values of Si and J, for specimens with shallow notches are larger than those of deep notches. The value of the rotational factor rp at initiation for different ratios of a/B' has also been studied and it is shown that rp is decreasing with decreasing a/W.
