β¦ Synopsis
Although understanding tail behavior of distributions is important in many areas, such as telecommunications network analysis and ΓΏnance, there is considerable controversy about distinctions between exponential-type and power-type tails. This paper explains why the distinctions are surprisingly di cult for popular methods in the literature, and why particularly large samples are needed for clear discrimination.

## Abstract The controversy over βfastβ and βslowβ helixβcoil transition rates in polypeptides is discussed. The βslowβ results are derived from the assumption that multiple NMR spectra of Ξ±βCH and NH groups arise from chemical exchange. In this paper it is shown that such spectra may be obtained w
