✦ Synopsis

Although understanding tail behavior of distributions is important in many areas, such as telecommunications network analysis and ΓΏnance, there is considerable controversy about distinctions between exponential-type and power-type tails. This paper explains why the distinctions are surprisingly di cult for popular methods in the literature, and why particularly large samples are needed for clear discrimination.

## Abstract The controversy over β€œfast” and β€œslow” helix‐coil transition rates in polypeptides is discussed. The β€œslow” results are derived from the assumption that multiple NMR spectra of α‐CH and NH groups arise from chemical exchange. In this paper it is shown that such spectra may be obtained w
