✦ Synopsis

I riot close; but the ,,ntimosa pudica" partly closed during the At H e l s i n g h o r g iu Sweden tho middle of the totality, which lasted 12 secoids, occurred at lh2'4af' Copenhagen mean time. Sensitive plants are said to have closed their leaves. On birds and swiiies the effects of the eclipse were very visible, on cattle and horses much less so. B y rrrquiring whilst the eclipse was yet in fresh remenil~rance, aa to the heavenly bodies seen and their apparent positions, I gathclr that Venus atid Jupiter -Hegulus, Capella, Vega (Lyre) Atair (Eagle) and Arctitrus were seen. Xobody that I heard of had noticed airy star which could he q p p o s e d to be Mercury.

At Elsi II o r e in Denmark it would appear that orrly tlie two Idaneta; Rcgulus Capella and perhaps Spica 'irg, were Been. The ), acaria cophanta ' I and ,,convoIvoIus tricolor " did highest point of the eclipse, and reopened when the sunlight got stronger. T h e eclipse iri this town was n o t total, bot orrly a very srnall reninant of the ~u n remained visible when the eclipse was greatest; from the agregate of my enquiries I should say that a very thin line of sunlight, perhaps from j to 8 drgrees of his circumference in length only remained uncovered by tlie moon. I deduce from these data, and the observations of the cyt.witnesees resident on both shores, that the southern huuii- tlarp of the dark shadow which came from the N. W. has passed between the towns of' Elsinore i n I h m a r k and Helsinghorg in Sweden, a t a distance of ahout 1 to 14 errglish mile S. W. of the latter.
