## AH-frons diphcnylhcxntrlcnc and diphcnyloctatctr~ene m solution show a very strong two-photon absorption beginning at about thu sarnc energy a~ the one-photon spectrum. This supports the postulated presence of n low-iying 'Ag clcctronic state.

We report the two-photon fluorescence excitation spectrum of poly(pphenylenevinylene) over the energy range 1.1-2.0 eV. The onset for two-photon fluorescence excitation is at 1.3 eV with a strong peak near I.475 eV. The peak locates the energy of the lowest even parity excited singlet at 2.95 eV, so
Two-photon excitation of C6o single crystal at 4 K shows a sharp band at 1.846 eV which is assigned to the lowest tbrbidden Frenkel singlet exciton of Tlg symmetry. This assignment is supported by the analysis of Herzberg-Teller induced photoluminescence.
The role of the low-lying two-electron excited 'As states of C, in contributing to its hyperpolarizability y is investigated by singly and doubly excited CI calculations in the semi-empirical CNDO/S approximation. It is found that inclusion of the doubly excited configurations is essential in evalua
