✦ Synopsis

The low temperature d-d absorption spectrum of bis(2-aminobenzothiazolium) copper tetrachloride is reported. The 2 2 lowest energy B2g(xy)~ Btg(x -y ) transition has a relatively sharp electronic origin which has not previously been 2 observed in a CuC! 4-ion. The polarisation properties of this electronic origin show it to be magnetic dipole allowed, The transition also has extensive vibrational structure and several false origins due to coupling with odd-parity vibrations. The direct observation of the electronic origin allows an accurate determination of the excited state geometry.

A system of "hot" bandsoriginating from the II= 1 level of the/& vibrational mode in the zpolarized 2A,,(z2)+2B,,(~Z-y\*) transition of the planar CuCB-ion of (methadonium),CuCl, is described. Their form suggests that the complex has a pseudo-.\_ tetrahedral geometry in the excited electronic state.
