## Abstract The nitro group of methyl 3โ€nitropyridineโ€4โ€carboxylate (**1**) has successfully been replaced by nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur nucleophiles by nucleophilic aromatic substitution to give the 3โ€azido, 3โ€methoxy, 3โ€phenoxy and 3โ€thiophenoxypyridineโ€4โ€carboxylates (**2a โ€” d**).
