Regioselective alkylation of 5-substituted-2H-tetrazoles 1 to 2-alkyl derivatives 3 was achieved via decarboxylative alkylation with alkyl cyanoformates. Lesser selectivity was observed with chloroformates.

The arylation of N-tributylstannylated 5-substituted tetrazoles with diaryliodonium salts at room temperature without base in CH 2 Cl 2 in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of Cu(OAc) 2 proceeds regioselectively at the N-2 position of the tetrazole ring.
